MISSION
To be the foremost centre of excellence in Africa in the areas of undergraduate and postgraduate training, research and service provision in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Reproductive & Sexual Health and allied maternal and new born health services.
BRIEF HISTORY
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology was one of the pioneer departments created when the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) was established in March 1967. Professor Okoronkwo Ogan was the pioneer Head of Department. He joined the department as an Associate Professor and was the only academic staff at the time. The second academic staff joined him in May 1967.
Over the years, the department has grown and now has thirty seven full-time members of academic/consultant staff and two visiting professors. A table of the academic/consultant staff disposition is attached. Currently, the department has about 53 resident doctors. Eight administrative staff members from the hospital support the department in its work.
ORGANIZATION AND WORK
For effective teaching of undergraduate medical students and training of resident doctors as well as specialised service provision and focused research, the department is organised under five sub-specialty firms namely:
- Infertility Management
- Reproductive Health and Family Planning
- Feto-maternal Medicine
- Uro-gynaecology
- Gynaecological Oncology.
Each of the firms is made up of three units of 2 or 3 consultants.
In addition to this, the department is a major part of the HIV team; providing services and coordination for the National Programme for the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT).
The department has concluded arrangements for the establishment of a full scale Reproductive & Sexual Medicine, Adolescent & Child Gynaecology and Marriage centre. The department has also submitted a proposal for the establishment of an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) unit on a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) basis. These units will serve as specialised centres for service provision, training and research in these areas which pose huge gaps in conventional obstetrical and gynaecological services.
Over the years, the department has been at the forefront of programmes and projects to achieve better health for women and neonates. Such programmes/projects include:
- National Programme for the Prevention of Maternal Mortality
- “Operation Stop Cervical Cancer in Nigeria”
- National Programme for the Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission of HIV(PMTCT)
- Training of doctors on Manual Vacuum Aspirator (MVA) for Post Abortion Care
- Regional and local trainings on family planning in collaboration with national and international partners
- National Training of doctors on basic Obstetrics & Gynaecology skills in collaboration with the Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology United Kingdom
- Training of doctors on Research Grant Writing and Application
Individual members of staff are currently either Principal Investigators (PI) or co-Principal Investigators (co-PI) of one project or another.
ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES AND RESEARCH
The main academic work of the department involves the training of medical students at the undergraduate and specialist levels. Currently, the department collaborates with the department of Paediatrics to run M.Phils./PhD programmes in the Institute of Maternal and Child Health.
The academic staff members of the department are world-class researchers who are prominently visible on academic citation websites such as ResearchGate and Google Scholar.
