UNTH COLLEGE OF NURSING SCIENCES HOLDS FIRST MATRICULATION CEREMONY

The College of Nursing Sciences, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku/Ozalla, Enugu, held its inaugural matriculation ceremony for ND/HND and BNSc students for the 2024/2025 academic year on Saturday, May 3, 2025. The ceremony, held at the College Auditorium, UNTH Old Site, Enugu, marked a significant milestone in the institution’s history.
In his speech, the Chief Medical Director of UNTH, Prof. Obinna Onodugo, emphasized the importance of taking their studies and training seriously. He assured the students of the institution’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment, including regular water supply, electricity, and a school bus. Prof. Onodugo also warned the students against joining cults and urged them to adhere to the school’s code of conduct.

The Provost of the College of Nursing Sciences, Prof. Mrs. Agnes Anarado, congratulated the matriculating students on their admission into the noble profession. She emphasized the institution’s commitment to delivering world-class professional training that blends academic rigor with practical experience. Her words of wisdom to the students were to embrace their journey with humility, curiosity, and a strong sense of purpose. The Acting Registrar Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Alhaji Alhassan Ndagi, was represented by Mrs. Chioma Chigbu, a staff member of the council, when delivering the registrar’s message.

The Commissioner for Education, Enugu State, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah , represented by Mrs. Uju Ozor, encouraged the matriculants to take their academic journey seriously.
The Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ikechukwu Obi, pledged the state government’s support for the institution. He highlighted the government’s healthcare program aimed at providing affordable healthcare systems in the state through the establishment of standard primary healthcare facilities, which will provide employment to health workers and stop brain drain.

A paper titled “Contemporary Nursing Education” was presented by Prof. Anthonia Chinweuba, highlighting the pivotal role of nursing education in shaping the future of healthcare.
The Registrar of the Institution, Mrs. Onyia Ngozi, administered the matriculation oath to the students, encouraging them to uphold the values and principles of the nursing profession and to be good ambassadors of the Institution
In her vote of thanks, Mrs. Anukwe Lucy, Deputy Provost and Chairperson of the Planning Committee, thanked the Chief Medical Director and the management for their support in making the occasion a reality. She urged the students to work hard and take their studies and training seriously.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, UNTH, Prof. Joy Eze; the Director of Administration, UNTH, Mrs. Uche Obi; the Registrar of the College, Mrs. Onyia; former Provost, College of Medicine, UNN, Emeritus Prof. Ernest Onwasigwe; the Director of Nursing, Enugu State, Mr. Felix Ugwu was represented by Mrs. Ukwu Faustina; and Dr. Mrs. Ugwu, NANMCN Chairman, Enugu State, among others.
